A songwriting tool got enhanced, not invented, in Cubase 8.5

The tool moment

On 2 December 2015, Steinberg released Cubase Pro 8.5 and Cubase Artist 8.5, a point update the company's own announcement describes as arriving “after releasing the award-winning eighth version of Cubase a year ago.” Chord Pads, the grid of triggerable, reassignable chords built into Cubase's arrange window, had shipped with that earlier Cubase 8. What 8.5 added, per Steinberg's own release notes, was a new Sections play mode and custom chord symbols, extending a feature the company already treated as one of the more distinctive parts of the program rather than introducing chord triggering itself.

What the documents show

Steinberg's own feature page for 8.5 calls the update “further enhancing one of the most inspiring songwriting tools available on any DAW,” language that only makes sense if Chord Pads already existed and had a following among Cubase users. The press release lists the Sections mode and custom symbols alongside other 8.5 changes, such as a reworked MixConsole and the new VST Transit collaboration service, without detailing exactly how Sections mode alters playback beyond adding the option. Both documents are Steinberg's own marketing and press copy; they state what the company built and shipped, not an independent assessment of how musically useful the addition proved for songwriters.

What stays with the musician

Chord Pads let a musician trigger and reassign chords by hand in real time, but the tool does not choose which progression serves the song, when a section should modulate, or how a triggered chord should be voiced against the rest of an arrangement. Sections mode organizes chord sets by song part, but the musician still decides what those parts are and when to move between them; the pads reduce the mechanical effort of trying out a change, not the compositional judgment behind it.

Judge it by listening

Steinberg's documents describe what Chord Pads and Sections mode let a user do; they make no claim about the quality of any specific progression triggered this way. A reader can listen for whether a Chord-Pads-built progression still develops across a song's sections, or whether Sections mode encourages the same set of voicings to repeat past the point of interest, and check the custom chord symbols against what is actually being played to confirm the pad layout still matches the arrangement. This is an editorial listening check, not a method Steinberg documents.

• Would the progression still hold up if triggered manually, without the pad layout's suggested order?
• Are the custom chord symbols kept in sync with edits made after the pads were first set?

Cubase 8.5's Chord Pads update is a reminder that a new-feature announcement often describes an extension, not an origin; Steinberg's own release notes make clear the underlying tool was already a year old and already, in the company's words, one of Cubase's more inspiring corners.
