
The tool moment
The MIDI Association's own General MIDI Level 1 page describes a minimum MIDI configuration it calls a General MIDI System, defining a class of MIDI-controlled sound generators. Before this specification, the same MIDI file could sound different from one instrument to the next, because MIDI itself only carries a Program Number, not a description of the sound. General MIDI's fix was to assign specific instrument names — the Association's own page gives 'Electric Piano' and 'Oboe' as examples — to fixed Program Numbers, so an arrangement made on one device would call up the intended instrument on another. Roland's own company history page dates its GS format, a superset of this standard, to 1991, anchoring the standard's practical arrival to the early 1990s.
What the documents show
The MIDI Association's current pages describe General MIDI as an active specification rather than a dated document, and the material retrieved on 16 September 2026 does not itself print an adoption date. The Association separates GM from MIDI itself: an archived version of its technical page states General MIDI is not the same as MIDI, since MIDI is a language, a file format, and a connector specification, while GM1 defines specific features of a MIDI instrument. The specification requires 128 preset instruments mapped to Program Numbers, 16 simultaneous timbres, all 16 MIDI channels, and percussion fixed to channel 10; the Association's own General MIDI overview page notes GM1 was superseded in 1999 by General MIDI 2.
What stays with the musician
A shared instrument map does not make an arrangement. General MIDI guarantees that Program Number 1 calls up something labeled a piano on a compliant device; it says nothing about voicing or velocity curves. A composer working within General MIDI's 128-instrument palette still makes every decision a composer makes with any fixed instrument list — which sound stands in for which instrument, and how the parts interact. The specification only guarantees playback as intended, not that the decision was a good one.
Judge it by listening
Because General MIDI's promise is about consistent playback, the most direct test is comparing the same Standard MIDI File across two GM-compliant devices: instrument selection should match, but the specification does not govern tone quality, so timbre can still vary between compliant playback engines. That gap, between compliant mapping and musically convincing sound, is where a General MIDI file can technically succeed and still sound thin or dated. Judging a GM-based arrangement means separating those questions, rather than blaming the specification for a synth engine's limitations.
- Does a MIDI file's instrument selection actually match across the devices or software it needs to play back on?
- Is a flat or dated sound coming from the General MIDI instrument map, or from the specific synth engine rendering it?
- Is a document describing General MIDI itself, or a manufacturer's own extension of it, such as Roland's GS format?
General MIDI is best understood as a compatibility guarantee, not a sound: the Association's own pages define what a compliant device must support, while a separately dated Roland history page anchors its practical arrival to the early 1990s.
