A permission is not a property right
A vendor can promise that an account holder may use an output commercially. That promise comes from a contract. Copyrightability asks whether law recognizes protectable authorship in the work, and which parts qualify. Those are different systems.
Ask four questions
- May the provider use or train on the input?
- What use of the output does the provider permit?
- What human-authored composition, performance and recording do you control?
- Will the client, distributor, society or insurer accept the result?
A “yes” to the second does not answer the other three.
Read plan boundaries
Some services tie rights to a paid plan, revenue threshold, medium, term or degree of modification. Some restrict standalone music distribution while allowing synchronization to video. Save the plan name and terms in force when the file was made and downloaded.
Map the human work
Keep lyric drafts, MIDI edits, recorded performances, arrangement versions and mix notes. These are useful creative records regardless of the eventual legal analysis. Avoid inflating trivial edits into an unsupported claim; describe what actually changed.
Escalate when the stakes rise
A private demo, library placement, brand campaign and label release carry different exposure. When a project is commercially important or includes another person’s voice, style or recording, obtain qualified advice for the relevant jurisdiction and contract.
“Allowed to use” and “able to exclude others from copying” are not synonyms.
