Automated mastering cannot recover an arrangement whose focal point is unclear or a mix bus that clips unexpectedly. Export a clean version with no accidental limiter, check the beginning and tail, and name the exact mix revision.
Make comparisons fair
A louder file often feels more exciting. Turn the mastered version down until its perceived level is close to the unmastered reference. Compare short, repeatable passages: dense chorus, exposed vocal, low-end transition and quiet ending. Use the same playback chain.
Listen for relationships
- Did the vocal move forward or become brittle?
- Did kick and bass separate or flatten into one mass?
- Did ambience become audible in a helpful way?
- Do transients still describe the groove?
- Does the quiet section remain meaningfully quieter?
Try more than one intention
If the service offers intensity or reference controls, render a restrained and a stronger version. Do not keep regenerating until fatigue makes a choice for you. Label each render with settings and date.
Decide from the release context
Check headphones, modest speakers and a mono sum if those reflect the audience. Platform normalization is not a reason to target one universal number; the arrangement, genre and delivery specification still matter. An automated suggestion is valuable when it reveals a mix issue even if you do not use the final file.
