A loop is not a rectangle of audio; it is a promise about what happens next. Generated material often supplies a persuasive center but a generic end: a cymbal vanishes, a bass note resets, or a reverb tail lands on the next kick. Rather than hunting for a technically perfect cut point, define the phrase and make the boundary serve it.
Hear the loop in multiples
Audition at least four repeats before editing. A seam that survives one return can become tiring at the third because a fill, breath, or accent repeats in the same place. Mark the moment you first anticipate the reset. That is often more useful than staring at the waveform.
Choose a phrase length before grid length
Count the harmonic and rhythmic question first. A four-bar file might contain a two-bar call and a two-bar answer; cutting it to one bar removes the answer. Conversely, a generated eight-bar section may repeat the same gesture every two bars and gain energy when reduced. Align the resulting phrase to the session grid only after you understand it. A tempo map can be preferable to stretching a naturally played loop into uniform bars.
Design the exit
Make a small change in the last half bar: mute a percussion hit, shorten a held note, automate a send, or add a pickup that leads into bar one. Avoid adding random ear candy just to prove the loop is changing. The change should clarify the next entrance. Keep the first pass simple enough that you can tell whether the boundary, rather than a new layer, solved the problem.
Worked example: a two-bar generated guitar figure
The figure ends with a bright open-string ring that collides with its own first chord. Keep the first bar intact. On the second pass, split just before the ring, fade the source naturally, and copy a quieter fragment of its room tone under the new downbeat. Every fourth repeat, leave the ring and remove the next guitar attack. The listener hears a longer breath without pretending the loop is a new performance each time.
Limitations
Variation cannot cure a part whose harmony, tone, or role is wrong. A loop also has no obligation to be seamless: a clear stop can be the arrangement. Keep track of copied regions and automation so a collaborator can identify what is original, derived, or replayed. Use tempo mapping before stretching for free-time material, and transition rebuilding when a section needs an actual departure.
