Ableton’s studio photograph puts the arrangement, instruments and listening position in the same frame.
Ableton · Source ↗Product context, not an in-house test or an identified artist’s session. The lean songwriter stack
Use one familiar DAW, a phone recorder, native editing and a single sketch tool only when the brief needs it. Spend the budget on monitoring, a reliable backup and time to perform. Export audio from the sketch tool early so the project does not depend on a changing web session.
The edit-heavy producer stack
Center the DAW and reversible audio work: stem separation for owned material, note or transient editing, a trusted restoration path and automated mastering as a comparison. Keep an unprocessed lane for every transformation. This stack values control and handoff over maximum generation speed.
The rights-sensitive commission stack
Use client-approved inputs, contractually documented models, explicit voice permissions and a delivery log. Prefer tools with readable terms, export evidence and a stable commercial scope. Build legal review into the project quote where identity, brands or significant media placement are involved.
Budget for exits
A tool is cheaper only if you can leave it. Check file formats, stem and MIDI export, local copies, account cancellation effects and whether past projects remain editable. Subscription arithmetic should include migration time.
Choose one source of truth
Keep the final arrangement and assets in the DAW project or another durable project folder, not scattered across generation histories. The stack should serve the song’s decisions; it should not become the archive.
Need → existing capability → missing function → export → rights → price.
