Stereo width can make a generated texture feel finished in isolation. It can also rely on left/right differences that shrink or cancel when channels are combined. A mono check does not tell you that a mix is good, and it does not require a narrow mix. It tells you what changes when a listener encounters a mono playback path.

Check at three scales

First switch the whole mix to mono and note the largest change: lead level, bass weight, snare impact, or ambience. Then solo the suspect bus and identify whether the problem is a widening plugin, doubled takes, a stereo sample, or a wet return. Finally return to the full mix. A part that sounds alarming alone may be harmless in context; a subtle whole-mix hole is usually more important.

Read meters as prompts

A correlation meter describes the phase relationship between left and right, not musical value. Apple’s documentation notes that negative values indicate out-of-phase material that can lead to cancellation in mono, while values right of center indicate mono compatibility. Use that to find moments to listen to—wide pads, chorus effects, stereo reverb—not as an automatic pass/fail rule.

Fix the responsible layer

Try reducing a width control, changing a chorus modulation, narrowing a reverb return, or retaining one dry center component. If double-tracked audio is the culprit, shift or re-record one layer rather than applying a blanket stereo imager. Recheck the mix balance after every change: recovering a mono center can make the stereo version feel too dry or too loud.

Worked example: a disappearing generated synth

A synth pad is wide in stereo but loses its chord identity in mono during the verse. Bypass its spread processor: the chord returns, but the part becomes small. Keep a low-level dry mono copy for the attack and narrow only the wet generated layer. The stereo mix remains spacious; the mono check now preserves enough pitch information to support the vocal. Compare against a version where the entire pad is mono before choosing.

Limitations

Mono compatibility is only one translation check. Headphones, cars, club systems, codecs and volume all reveal different problems. Correlation can also vary across a passage, so inspect the relevant moment rather than averaging a whole song. Before delivery, use a level-matched reference and seam listening for local artifacts.
